A single sculptural gateway marking the entrance to an Eidgah ground, built as a tapered frame around a pierced geometric screen.
The brief
An Eidgah ground is used intensively twice a year and stands open the rest of the time, so the one permanent structure it needs has to carry the identity of the place on its own.
The gateway is a tapered concrete frame, wider at the top than the base, holding a large pierced screen of interlocking geometric pattern. The taper makes the structure read as deliberate rather than merely rectangular, and the screen is set back within the frame so it catches a shadow line through the middle of the day.
The name of the ground is carried across the head of the frame. Broad shallow steps run up to the opening, and the platform is finished in patterned paving so the threshold is legible even when the ground beyond is empty.
