ARCHIDot

The studio

Architecture for this climate.

ARCHIDot works from Dhanmondi, Dhaka, on buildings across Bangladesh — houses, clinics, shops, mosques and civic spaces. The studio is small on purpose: the architect who draws your project is the one who visits your site.

What we believe

Architecture in Bangladesh is usually judged on the elevation. We think it should be judged on how a building behaves in April, when it is thirty eight degrees outside, and in July, when it has been raining for nine days.

That points the work in a particular direction. Perforated brick screens instead of tinted glass. Deep window reveals and generous roof overhangs instead of air conditioning carrying the whole load. Plans arranged so air can move from one side of the house to the other. Materials chosen because they weather well in this humidity, not because they photograph well on the day of handover.

None of that is nostalgic. These are the cheapest tools available for making a building comfortable, and they were standard here long before mechanical cooling made it possible to ignore them.

The second thing we believe is that a drawing set should be complete. Most cost overruns on site are not design problems, they are decision problems: something was left undrawn and got resolved badly by whoever was standing there. We would rather spend the extra week detailing.
