View project
A boundary wall and gate designed as one piece, with decorative metal panels, planters and a tiled canopy over the opening.
The brief
A boundary is the first thing anyone experiences of a property, and it is usually an afterthought: a wall built by one trade and a gate bolted on by another.
Here both are drawn together. The wall is articulated into regular bays, each carrying a decorative metal panel set into a rendered frame, with planters built into the base so greenery runs along the whole length. Lamp posts sit on the piers at fixed intervals to set the rhythm.
The opening itself is marked by a pitched, tiled canopy carried on the gate piers, which shelters anyone waiting at the gate and signals the entrance clearly from down the road. The gate leaves are timber-battened steel, deliberately lighter in appearance than the masonry either side of them.
